Choosing the right basketball hoop height isn’t just about rules and regulations. The right hoop height makes the game more accessible and rewarding too. The official basketball hoop/rim height for all senior regulated games is 3.05m (10ft).

Adjustable vs Fixed Hoops

At the senior level and in all professional leagues including the NBA, WNBA and FIBA, the official basketball hoop diameter is 45.72cm (18 inches). This standard applies to high school, college and international games.

The diameter of the basketball hoop is almost always 45.72cm (18 inches) regardless of the age group playing. Although some mini basketball hoops might have smaller diameter rings to suit smaller youth-sized basketballs. STANDARD BASKETBALL BACKBOARD SIZE

In the NBA, the regulation backboard size is 183 cm x 107 cm (72 inches by 42 inches). The backboard must be flat, transparent, and have a target box clearly marked out on it. The target box is  61 x 46 cm (24 x 18 inches), and the bottom edge aligns with the rim height to help players with bank shots and aiming.

Backboard Sizes for Recreation

While 182.9cm (72 inch) backboards are standard in professional settings, other sizes are common in schools, gyms, and playgrounds:

• 122cm (48 inch) backboards are often used in recreational courts for a larger target area.
• Fan-shaped backboards, typically around 84cm (33 inches) tall, are popular on playgrounds and home setups. These aren’t regulation-sized but are great for casual play and younger players.
