What basketball size do you need?
Choosing the right size basketball is crucial for players of all ages and skill levels. If you buy a ball that is too big or too small, then it could potentially hinder your development and performance, diminishing players enjoyment of the game in the process.
In this guide we delve into the different basketball sizes available to help you buy a basketball to suit you. We cover basketball sizes by age and gender so you can be sure you’re buying the correct ball size.
BASKETBALL SIZES BY AGE
Basketballs come in a wide variety of sizes and each size is suited to a specific age group and in some instances gender. Each basketball ball size has a standard circumference and weight which is shown in the basketball size chart below.
Size 3 (Mini)
Size 3 basketballs are referred to as mini basketballs and their circumference is approximately 56 cm with a weight of 280 grams. This is the smallest size basketball, ideal for children aged 4-8 years old. These basketballs are great for introducing young players to the sport and developing basic skills.
Size 5 (Youth)
Designed for youth players, size 5 basketballs are perfect for children aged 9–11 years old. They have a circumference of 70cm and weigh 480 grams. These balls are commonly used in youth leagues as players being to learn the rules and play more competitively.
Size 6 (Intermediate/Women’s)
A size 6 basketball is ideal for intermediate players and is the official ball size for the WNBL (Women’s National Basketball League) in Australia. Measuring at 72cm in circumference and 570 grams in weight, they are used by girls aged 12 and over as well as boys aged 12-14 years old.
Size 7 (Official/Men’s)
The largest size available, size 7 basketballs measure 75cm in circumference and 630 grams in weight. This is the official size used in the men’s professional leagues such as the NBL (National Basketball League) in Australia, as well as in men’s colleges and high school competitions. The NBA also uses size 7 basketballs.
