Netball is one of the most popular sports in Australia, and thousands of players across the country enjoy playing the game every week in schools, clubs and other local venues. Participation numbers have grown year on year for the last few years, and players as young as 5 are able to the learn the fundamentals of netball through Netball Australia’s Net, Set and Go program.
To aid with the development of younger players netball has recommended ring heights that vary by age group to allow players to develop. Using the correct netball hoop height is essential as it allows players to learn and maintain the correct technique, whilst also reducing the risk of injury and making the game more enjoyable. How tall is a netball hoop?
The standard, official height for a netball hoop for players aged 11 is 3.05m (10ft). This height is used in all senior and international matches.
However, for younger players, the height of a netball ring is often adjusted to support their development and make sure the game is more accessible.
These ages include:
- Ages 9-11 approximately 2.75m (9 feet)
- Ages 7-9 (or younger beginners) approximately 2.44m (8 feet)
Many netball posts are designed for home or school use by different player ages so many of them are adjustable which will allow you to set and change the height to suit various age groups.

OTHER NETBALL DIMENSIONS
Pole diameter
- Regulation netball poles (the posts that hold the ring) have a diameter of 65mm to 100mm.
- Many practice and junior posts may have a smaller diameter which is often around 50mm.
Ring (hoop) dimensions
- Internal diameter: The standard internal diameter of a netball ring is 380mm (15 inches).
- Ring thickness: The metal rod forming the ring should be approximately 15mm in thickness.
The net that attaches to the ring should measure 380mm. For safety, at tournament level, netball posts require padding of uniform thickness, which cannot exceed 50mm, this should extend to the full length of the pole.
For freestanding posts, although there are no regulations for dimensions, we recommend that they are heavily weighted and stable enough to prevent toppling, often achieved by filling it with sand or water.
