Hockey Stick Size Guide

Fitting & Size Guide for Hockey Sticks

To play at your best and reach your full potential in any sport, you need the right equipment. From tennis rackets, to soccer boots, poorly fitted or incorrectly sized equipment can negatively affect performance and increase the risk of injury. Field hockey sticks are the same - a stick that is too long or too short can impact a player's technique, cause frustration and force the player to adjust unnaturally to the stick’s size. This in turn can increase the risk of injury, limit performance and hinder a player's development and enjoyment of the game.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re playing hockey for the first time or competing at Olympic level. Getting a stick that is the correct size matters. This visual guide will help you find a hockey stick that is the perfect fit for you or a loved one.

Hockey Stick Size Chart

The chart below makes it simple to find a hockey stick that's the correct size based on player height. A quick glance is all it takes to find the hockey stick length that suits you, or the player you’re buying for.

Field Hockey Sticks Size by Height

The table below shows the recommended stick length a hockey player should use, according to their height. Height is displayed in the first 2 columns, in feet & inches in the first column, and in cm in the second column. As hockey sticks are universally sized in inches, the recommended stick length for each height range is displayed in the 3rd column.

Choosing the Right Stick for Your Game

Different positions and different playing styles may have a slight influence on the optimal length and weight of a hockey stick for a given player. Defenders, midfielders and attackers will all tend to look for slightly different properties in a stick. The right stick can help emphasise a player's strongest attributes, making them more effective and likely to succeed during a competitive game.

The table below contains some general stick size and properties preferences in relation to a hockey player's position. These are general guidelines and don't always hold true with all players. For example, some defenders may prefer a shorter stick for quick and close-range tackles and interceptions.

Hockey Stick Guide By Position
Position Preferred Stick Why
Defender Longer, heavier stick Extra reach for tackles and more power to clear the ball.
Midfielder Balanced stick Mix of control and power to link defence and attack.
Attacker Shorter, lighter stick Better handling and close control for dribbling and quick skills.
Goalkeeper Specialist goalie stick Durable design to block, clear and withstand repeated impacts.

Average Field Hockey Stick Length & Dimensions

As shown in the table above, hockey sticks are available in both junior and senior sizes, with lengths ranging from 28 to 37.5 inches. The rules regarding hockey stick dimensions are set out by the International Hockey Federation (FIH). The FIH sets the maximum stick length of 104cm (41 inches) in 2015.

For adults, the vast majority of sticks used are between 89 and 95cm (35 and 37.5 inches). Handles are typically 30.5 to 35.6cm (12-14 inches) long and approximately 3cm (1.2 inches) wide. Weight is also an important consideration, with lighter sticks offering speed and heavier designs generating greater power.  Adult sticks generally weigh 538–595g (19–21oz). Since 2013, the maximum legal weight has been 737g (26oz).

The image below shows the typical dimensions that senior hockey players use:

A stick is more than just its length. The balance between handle, shaft and head shapes how it feels in play. A longer handle gives reach, but can be harder to control in tight spaces.

The head is key to ball control. Its curve affects how easily you can dribble, pass and strike. Since the 1980s, the FIH has refined rules to keep shapes fair and consistent.

In the 1980s, a limit was placed on the upturn of the toe head, which was set at 10cm (3.9 inches) and in 2011, a rule was established stating that the stick bow position, could not be less than 20cm (8 inches) above the head of the stick.

Modern sticks can also vary in terms of bow profile and construction materials. The bow can range from a standard 20mm to extreme low bows that meet the maximum allowed legal curvature - 25mm (1 inch). What makes this bow 'extreme' is not the depth, but how close to the head the curve is placed - typically as close as legally allowed - which, as stated above is 20cm (8 inches).

How do you size a field hockey stick?

Standard Hockey Stick Sizing Method
The simplest way to check if a stick fits is to measure it against your body. Place it upright on the ground and see where it reaches.

For most players, the right length is level with the top of the hip bone. Defenders often choose a slightly longer stick for reach in tackles and clearances. Attackers tend to prefer something shorter, which offers more control. For children, many coaches recommend a stick that comes up higher and closer to the belly button.

The Dutch Method of Hockey Stick Sizing
There’s also the “Dutch Method” of stick sizing. Turn the stick upside down and tuck the curved head under your armpit. Stand tall. The base of the stick should line up roughly with the middle of your kneecap.
