Using the correct size soccer ball is important for player development, as different size balls are suited to specific age groups. The wrong size ball can hinder progress, increase the risk of injury, and make it more challenging to transfer skills to competitive games where the correct sized ball is used.

Australia Football and FIFA recommend the following ball sizes are used in games and practice sessions.

Size 1 & 2 Soccer Balls

There are no official guidelines for size 1 and 2 soccer balls, but most coaches would typically recommend that players aged 3-5 should use size 2 balls and players aged under 3 should use size 1. Size 1 balls have a circumference of 45-50cm, and size 2 balls have a circumference of 55-56cm.

Size 3 Soccer Balls – Under 6 to Under 10

According to Football Australia and their MiniRoos initiative players aged at under 6 to under 10 level should use size 3 soccer balls. Size 3 balls have a circumference of 58.5-61 cm. The recommended air pressure for these balls is 0.58-1.06 bar / 8.5-15.5 psi.

Size 4 Soccer Balls – Under 10 to Under 14

For players at under 10 to under 13 Football Australia suggests that a size 4 ball should be used. The circumference of size 4 soccer balls is between 63.5-66cm. The pressure for these balls should be between 0.58-1.06 bar / 8.5-15.5 psi.

Size 5 Soccer Balls – Players aged 14+

For players aged 14 and above, the recommended ball size is 5 which is the standard adult size for all soccer balls. These balls typically have a circumference of 68-70cm. The recommended air pressure for size 5 balls is 0.6-1.1 bar / 8.7 15.95 psi.
